Paolo Conte

Italian jazz singer Paolo Conte has been my choice of music this week. A poet, painter, and lawyer, Conte first got recognized for his talent in music in the 60′s and gained considerable success throughout Europe. Notable for his raspy, grainy voice and dreamy sometimes melancholic lyrics. I can easily see his songs being used as samples.

Listen to him here and here.

An Interview With Dan Pelissier

Daniel has been an influencial factor for Montreal Hardcore. In fact, everything I know about hardcore is because of Dan and Fred. I know them both for years. From booking shows, playing in bands, bringing in legendary hardcore bands, they’ve done it all for this city and its scene. I owe it all to Size’Em Up!

“First show i booked in Montreal was in 1998 I think. I had recently met some Montreal people at a show in Syracuse. I started communicating more with Montreal kids and came out here a few times for shows. Through all of this i became friends with this guy name Fred who was doing shows here and him and i decided to do a show together at Cafe Linco (rip) I moved to Montreal shortly after but didn’t start putting on shows until i moved back the second time in 2003. I decided to bring out this band called Mental for my birthday and what i thought was a one time thing became a full time effort. Here we are in 2010 and shows are still alive and well in Montreal. Lots of different little scenes but all of them are striving with a lot of individuals putting in time and effort to make things happen.”

Boston’s Guns Up

The last time I saw Dan (Guns Up’s vocals) was back in my Goodfoot days. He was living in Montreal for a few months. Sometimes he would come by the shop to hang out on the stoop and keep Nick and I busy on slow days. It’s been a minute since I’ve seen Guns Up play in Montreal, so I’m pretty stoked for tomorrow’s show.  Dan don’t disappoint me and make the crowd go crazy!

Bad Brains show at CBGB, NYC.

+ It was also during that trip that I walked into DQM and Supreme for the first time.
+ Wore my first pair of AM90s the whole weekend (picked those up in Philly).
+ Ate my first turkey burger at Dojo’s (which became an obsessions everytime I’m in NYC)
+ Unforgettable moments.

I’ve been told several times that I look like a mix between Cat Power and Feist. I’m thinking “yeah right I wish”.

I completely adore Cat Power. Her minimalist style, sparse guitar  and piano playing, and breathy vocals are perfect. Have you ever seen this commercial or heard this cover? There is absolutely nothing wrong with what she does to her music. Nothing.
